Starving Dog as Art- The Utter Outrage

***I have started a fundraising page so that we can all do something where as the people at the exhibit did nothing to help this poor dog. Please make an online donation today to help strays in Central America. We will not sit back and do nothing in the face of animal cruelty. Let us take our collective anger & outrage and turn it into something positive. Let's renew our faith in humanity and make a difference: http://www.firstgiving.com/centralamericanstrays
More about the charity:http://www.mckee-jaco.com/aboutus.htm

Wanted to share this & ask everyone to sign this http://www.petitiononline.com/13031953/petition.html(it is in Spanish). The petition is to boycott an “artist” who used a starved dog as his “art exhibit”. I cannot comprehend the gallery owners or anyone allowing this. It makes my stomach turn.

Please sign the petition to boycott the artist. His name is Guillermo Habacuc Vargas. He took a starving dog off the street and tied it up in a gallery as his exhibit. He felt that the dog would have eventually died on the streets so it was okay to let it continue starving. This sickens me so much- I can’t comprehend how so many people stood by and did nothing. They were complicit in this dog’s death. How did anyone not try to help? Apparently the “artist” did not allow anyone to give the dog food or water (how did anyone not do anything ???). He justifies that the dog would have died anyway- except that he could have saved that poor animal and countless others who were there & involved could have saved the dog. I hope he gets what he deserves one day- a slow agonizing death from thirst & starvation as people stand around to watch his death as they mingle, have drinks & make small talk. What this “artist” has done is so reprehensible and I cannot comprehend how this was allowed to happen. What is next? More copycat "artists"- homeless starving people chained up in a gallery to die as art?

Has cruelty & death become so commonplace that people let this dog die for “art”? Or that people have become so complacent that no one speaks out or does anything when something as horrible as this is happening in front of them? I would have broken all sorts of laws to rescue this poor dog. This is such an outrage that I can barely find the words to express myself properly.

Please sign this petition to boycott this “artist” representing his country in the Biennal Central America Honduras 2008 exhibition. I can't believe that this man has not been arrested for his horrible crime and the gallery owners as well as the participants who did nothing to help.

Here are images of the event- people actually sipping their drinks around the “exhibit”- so sad & disturbing:

My heart breaks over this poor dog. He is surely in a better place than in the cruel world that would offer up his torture & death as art. I would like to believe that there is such thing as karmic retribution for the "artist" and all those who did nothing to help. Rest in peace little one.

Everyone has the right to express their anger at the situation, but please exercise restraint when it comes to language and descriptive acts- as with all of you, I am very upset by this, but being vegan, I have been reminded to embrace compassion (which I admit that I forgot when first confronted by this horible act). Of course I denounce this act, but let's denounce this act with restrained language- thank you.

That is completely DISGUSTING!! It's almost as bad that no one has done anything about it. Unbelieveable. Is there some way to get in touch with an animal protection service in Honduras (?) .

Vivacious Vegan said...

This is awful - beyond words. Every single one of the people in the background should be prosecuted and jailed for their inaction. And you're right. The "artist" should be forced to die the same agonizing death. The sweet little face of that dog made me cry.

I signed the petition and I passed the info along to other friends.

I just don't understand how people could have seen this and not reacted. I don't know what I would have done, but I know I would have done SOMETHING if I saw this. I hope reading these kinds of stories makes us all remember that when faced with this stuff, we must act. Thanks so much vko for this story, sad as it is.

Since your blog is much more popular, and attracting much more visitors than my, I post the link here: http://reiskeks-natividad.blogspot.com/ [the poor dogs name was Natividad...]. I have written to Peta also, they say "thank you, we watch the case, but it may take up to 2 weeks etc...". I hope, maybe...

Oh VKO, I am crying. I immediately went to the petition and both Daiku and I signed, even before leaving this comment. I almost can't believe this is real. My heart breaks. How does that dumbfuck know that the dog was going to starve? It was a stray, yes, but it had more of a chance of surviving on the streets than in a sterile gallery where it would have NO chance of even getting a drop of water. No words can describe this. None.

The Bienalle has long been a source of worry to me in that their exhibits have deteriorated throughout the years to levels which don't even bare remembering. I thought a man painting a canvas using is own faeces was the limit and have not followed what has happened since because I was so disgusted at this outright sensationalism. ( That was in Venice ) THIS however is beyond human and transcends anything which they did before. They should be so ashamed of themselves no matter WHAT the reasons were......NOT acceptable ! I hang my head in shame because I belong to a species which is so unbelievably cruel to others.

Thank you all for helping to move this petition along and making a stand against cruelty.

As for Mandy W's lovely but inaccurate yet insightful comment: the images came from numerous blogs like pet lover's tips, sodahead & websites like care2 forums which carry the same photos, but it does raise the question of who took these horrible photos at the exhibit in Nicaragua.

I only wish that someone would do this to the "artist." I could not even believe what I was reading. Only people that are f'd in the head would not feed or water this poor animal. This exceeds the limit of animal cruelty. May the poor lil guy rest in a happier place [though I still think someone should have taken him away] I am just so besides myself.

FemaleTaurus427 said...

Wow! I have worked at an animal shelter and have seen starving animals come in on a daily basis, but for someone to actually put that in his "art" studio and have people come in and act like nothing happens is sickening and sad. But unfortunately, that is what society has become.

Nothing is pure anymore and people have no feelings of remorse.. if they are living a healthy lifestyle.. why should it matter to them how they treat other human beings/animals or why should they lend out a helping hand you know.. Wow! It surprises me in a way, but then again it doesn't.

I guess what surprises me is, to see normal people walking around the leashed animal watching it lie there with no food or water and to them THAT WAS OK.

It's a dog. I personally think it should have been fed to starving humans...that would have been more ironic and artistic. And before anyone says "how would you like being eaten" or some crap...I'm a human, i evolved past all other animals so i could eat them. The weak die and the strong survive.

Anonymous said...

You "would have" broken all kinds of laws to save the dog. And yet... you didn't. So until proven otherwise, you're another anonymous tough-talking blogger. Like the million others who are "leading change and progression" from the safety of their living rooms instead of getting out into the world and actually doing anything.

Why don't you sidebar the righteous indignation for a change. It's a dog. Its a dog. A fucking dog. In the grand scheme of existence, it's a fucking dog. Call me heartless, but who fucking cares. It's a dog.

thing is that this guy is gaining fame at this very moment, there will be more like him...just for the chance to get their name out there. why not just quietly slip out the back, pay a crackhead $20us to throw this jerk in front of a bus?
I wonder how many people who sign petitions like these ever consider making a donation to a shelter. In some countries they'd eat the dog! We have hundreds of thousands of people dying of starvation daily, why not try and save even one? This jerk gets all the attention because he put a starving dog in an artshow, wake up people...

This spanish artist Guillermo Habacuc Vargas is an evil and disturbed individual. Isn't this type of behaviour indicative of serial killers? Where were the authorities in all of this, are there no laws to protect animals from this kind of cruelty, was there no organization such as the RSPCA that people could have gone to. And how anybody can stand by and watch something like this take place and call it art are as culpable as the man himself in my book. I hope that one day this man gets what is coming to him, personally I think it would be an idea to chain him up and strip the flesh from his body very very slowly, and while he is watching feed his flesh to a pack of starved dogs. A slow and agonising death is just what this man deserves

Okay, first, and foremost, I am not a vegan, but, the way this had come about, and continued was outrageous. Everything happens for a reason, yes, what one choses to do with the oppotunities is totally different. Some insensative, lazy, pathetic, non creative, whimpering whelp of a person( more sub humanistic consideringthe treatment of this creature)had the option to help an innocent creature, or even left it alone. At least alone would have been better, then the pup would've stood a fighting chance of survival, instead this complete moron with no originality, nor imagination takes a creature of circumstance, and makes his survival rate that much more unlikely. How would he like us to gather a mob, storm his home, or flat, drag him to an art exibit, tie him up, and let him starve, calling him art?
At least the animal was innocent, it had no grudges, had commited no crimes that it knew of, and was just trying to survive with what few options it had, and to take away those options for greeds sake, and hoping to make a name for ones self shows what has become of mankind slowly, but certainly. Materiality has become more important to the masses than compassion, love, and caring on many levels. It is a shame to see such rediculous things being permissable, let alone, in any mind, save that of the extremely desensitized, contortedly, brutally insane. I find this to ba abhorant, yet, I am afraid, it is only one example of materiality, and greed superceeding morality, and beneviolent emotional content.
Truely pathetic, and it is people of this calibur, if it weren't illegal, I would do away with for they are the scum of the earth, and waste the air, and space of those who might actually grow into being someone worthwhile to this world, and timeline.

I can not believe that this type of thing is allowed in the name of art!!! Wtf is sooooooooo intriguing or considered artist about allowing an animal to starve to death??!!?? Matt said...

Yeah...signing a petition...that will solve the problem of all the starving animals and people in the world. Makes you part of the problem, not part of the solution. Why don't you people get off of your computers and do something to try and help solve the problem instead of pretending to be all up in arms about it?

reiskeks said...

@ matt:
All those guys actually do something, they gather attention for such cases of inhumanity, they show HOW MANY people in fact DO care about it, and even one single sign is something positive done, instead of sitting around like you and just criticizing. If you are so great, why are you in front of your computer screen and writing meaningless comments instead of doing "big great things"?

Either we do something which brings us forward, or we do nothing, but you prefer obviously to do nothing AND to criticize, THIS will certainly change the world!

blogging about this issue *is* doing something about it and signing the petition shows the ppl running art galleries that this artist's "art" is disgusting and that by banning that person from showing their "art" they are being sent a message saying "cut it out we don't approve" - but of course there will always be ppl like you who deliberately try to rattle ppl into making responses and sinking to your level ... it's nice to know that i have more compassion in my left little toe than u have altogether

I live in Dharamsala, India, where the people are kind, but often poor, and many street dogs die of disease, injury, or resulting starvation. It is unfortunate in these "third-world" societies that these sweet and loving animals sometimes become too sick and depressed to eat, and then starve to death. The locals here don't know what to do about it- they can barely afford their own healthcare, and many of the people are sick and dying too! And animal aid societies are few and far between in countries that are only beginning to provide adequate social services for humans. Two months ago, my husband and I took one of these dogs off the street, and it only cost about $50 (and many long, sleepless nights) to take him from the brink of death by starvation and maggot-infested wounds to what he is today- the happy, wonderful, sweetheart that is curled up beside my chair right now. But I have never seen something as horrible as this "artist"! And Vincent, the doggy we rescued, was MUCH sicker than the poor animal that this horrible man has now killed for recreation. I am appalled. I spent three weeks FORCING Vincent to eat to stay alive, by using a syringe to put food directly down his throat. And everytime he would throw it up, we would start all over again. And it is sickening that this "artist" (a Costa Rican, no less, and I've spent alot of time in Costa Rica- it is a beautiful country that prides itself on its eco-diversity) and his patrons allowed this to happen. Today, in response to seeing this monstrosity of "art," my husband and I went out and rescued another street doggy from certain death from mange and infection. We've seen her at the bus station, and knew that she needed medical treatment, so that is what we did- we went to the pharmacy and bought the necessary supplies and administered them ourselves. And you would not believe how many smiles and thanks we got from the locals who watched us help her.

I believe that it is important to spread happiness and peace, and to allow others to see us do good deeds. It improves our mood. It improves the mood of the bystanders. And it improves our world. Don't let this horrible "artist" turn you into someone like him. Don't wish awful experiences on him and the others who allowed this to happen. Sign the petition, yes. He and his supporters should know that there are moral and ethical people out there who disapprove! Hit him in the pocketbook and the ego, and make his "art" un-fashionable and worthless. And then use your outrage to make a positive difference in the lives of other animals and people of third-world nations. Fundraise, donate, or, if you are inclined, get out there and make a difference first-hand by setting up your OWN animal aid society in a third world country. That is what my husband and I have decided to do. We are beginning the planning processes of organizing an animal aid society here in Dharamsala to provide on-street medical care, catch-and-release spay and neuter services, a small dog shelter for sick and aggressive animals, and public information campaigns for the doggies of Dharamsala.

See the pictures of the Dharamsala doggies here: http://vincents-left-ear.blogspot.com/

In this world there is real art and there is joke art.
For some people art has been turned into the shock one-liner, the gag, the outrageous gesture that 'must be art' because so many people find it offensive. This is an example of this type of 'thinking' taken too far!

Set the dog free NOW! …and lock up the so-called ‘artist’!

I am an Animal lover, and seeing this is disgusting and vile, yet... A barbaric artistic expression, to say the least. But I have to be that -ONE- guy. Why are we all worrying about one animal, that we can clearly see has no desire to live. THIS crap happens all the time. Just like starving children, starving people. Dying people. But we wan't to petition this. We are on the brink of world war three. But we petition this. Yes I disagree with what I am seeing, and yes I think the person(s) responsible for this heinous and diabolical crime should be brought to justice. But should we not be a little more concerned with more important things, like getting health care down to an affordable rate for all people. How many of you here HONESTLY feel that scoring money up to heal this dog, is worth it? When so many animals like him die much more painful and miserable deaths each day? Or the Children that die equally painful deaths each day? Or are even remotely concerned that we are quite possible about to engage into a war that could very well destroy most of the world? Think things over, this is a dark time we are living in. We let murderers walk free from court hearings, we demolish countries for thier oil, we allow horrid examples of of "role models" go free after intensive drug use, and careless choice making after clearly breaking the law. But lets save dogs, cats, mice, ferrets. Yes, you have my petition put the bastard in jail, but don't think lightly on more important global on-goings. Like, the survival of our planet.

(I will repeat this for every new "wisefool", who prefers to sit on his fat ass, do nothing to change AND try to stop others with stupid nihilistic comments)

This is a rumor. Y'all are just advancing the cause of this artist by spreading this information that you don't know is true:

Rumor Has It.

Dear Jake:

This story is unfortunately true- I contacted the gallery myself & they have released a press release which they have also sent to the national costa rican newspaper- Nacion:
http://luckybunnynyc.blogspot.com/2007/10/last-update-on-this-blog-on-starved-dog.html

On the snopes site it does not say that the story is not true- they just say that it has not been confirmed.

Also on Reiskek's blog- she has updated that a major German news magazine has confirmed the story:
http://reiskeks-natividad.blogspot.com/

Jake said...

You're right, Snopes says it has not been confirmed. Show me the confirmation. I don't see any proof here. I don't take what people write on blogs to be the truth. in fact it's quite possible that the person/artist who blogged about this gallery show in the first place was a fake. I don't know.

It would be sad if a dog died for art, but what's even more frightening is that people are calling for the execution of the artist and it's not even clear weather there was a crime committed. You can't believe everything you read, especially if you're going to base extreme judgments on it.

One thing's for sure. All this talk about this artist is surly raising their profile.

this is NOT ART. I am a profassional artist. I have exhibited and attended hundreds of exhibitions with artists from all over the world . It is an accepted fact that the point of art is to cause people to think but this is utterly pointless. It is something people bear witness to daily and this guy is nothing but a SICK FUCK who was getting off on taking some of his emotional problems out on this animal. Perhaps the dog would have died eventually , but it would at least have found its way to water !!! Rot in hell you sick piece of shit !

Stephan said...

Tell me... how would the artist feel if he were to be tied up like the dog as an exhibit and he starved to death whilst people were making small talk and drinking around him....?

This leads me to believe that the artist is NOT and should NOT even call himself an artist but a monster instead who has no regard for 'life' as we know it.

Think about it.

How could anyone do something so cruel to an innocent creature? What is wrong with apparently so many people in this world. And to call something such as this "Art" and to say that they are an "artist" is abhorrent. Why in the world is animal cruelty seemingly becoming a justifiable act, there is nothing justifiable about it EVER!!!! This should serve as a wake up call that perhaps some people in this world are becoming way too tolerant to things that should be truly considered horrible beyond a doubt. I can only hope that this creep gets whats coming to them, may justice run its course and they get what they truly deserve. Thats just disgusting.

i think this is so sick this man did this , but i have to ask you guys if you know why he did it? he did it to show that no one cares if a dog dies on a street corner starving but if you put it where the public can see then people care. i have two dogs and LOVE them to peices they are my babies. but you should think of why he did this…he did it to prove a point that no one is sitting here talking about the dogs dying on the streets…but they are talking about one of millions that are because it was put on display. i think this should never have been allowed to be in a gallery. but the reason he did it was a very unsual reason and you should think about that.
i did sign the petition against this but the reason he did it was meant to be eye opening.

Art is absolutely not a worthy excuse for that kind of inhumane treatment. I'm not vegan, or vegetarian.. I am not a PETA sheep.. I eat meat, and I (probably) use products that have been tested on animals. But the suffering endured by those animals that I eat or that have medications and products that I use tested on them are not suffering in vain. There is a worthwhile benefit to humanity.. some poor dog being chained up to starve and die as entertainment does not benefit humanity - it only brings to notice the utter indecency of human beings.

Its funny that probably all of you were never thinking about the starving dogs in Costa Rica before this artist made his exhibit. Now that its brought before your eyes in this way, you all care all of a sudden...which makes all of you hypocrites. This is what the artist was saying. Granted what he did was extreme, but at least be fair and mention in this site WHY the artist was doing it. He's not a sadist, he knew what he was doing.
Im not here to judge art or moral standards but one thing is for sure: This dog was probably bound to a meaningless death due to negligence. At least now he found meaning in his death that never existed in his life..which was waking all you dipshits up.

Christine said...

Wow. Everyone is so OUTRAGED.. OUTRAGED enough to sign a petition for a starving dog that died. But I am guessing that not one of you people help out starving HUMANS let alone animals. You think you are above this man who brought this subject to everyone's attention, yet none of you do anything to help FEED the starving. Signing a petition will not feed anyone or anything.
The dog would have died eventually anyways, as all do..hence the term "starving dog". No one would have been the wiser, nor cared that it had died.
Any of you who knew about dogs starving in poor countries (saw them on tv, documentaries etc) and did nothing about it before, are far worse of a human being than this man is. None of you have EVER done anything about it and now you hate a man who threw the fact in your face that you are all heartless UNTIL you are sickened into doing good.. you are all pathetic losers.

whoever started the rumour that this man could possibly be "executed" for this is a raging retard. Get a grip people.
You show me ANYWHERE in the world that someone could get executed for anything like this ( cruelty to animals etc)..
As for you all signing a petition.. whoopee.. Do you people even know why you are signing it? It is so he cannot take part in an art show.. To boycott him from participating.. DUMMIES.. HOW MANY ANIMALS IS THAT GOING TO SAVE???
ummm the answer is NONE!!!!!!!!!
You all think you deserve a pat on the back and a medal for signing it, but you arent even doing anything to help animals. let alone starving ones..why dont you all think before you open your mouths and actually do something that pertains to what you are all so mad about.

I posted a thoughtful disagreement to most of the comments on this entry and it was promptly deleted. I guess a discussion is not what you're after...I guess what you want is a one-sided "the world is black and white" kind of blog. Hooray. You've got it.

What I said is that thousands upon thousands of animals starve to death on the street daily. This is bad and horrible, I agree. However, by bringing this to the attention of the world at large, this artist has been demonized. I cannot comment on his intentions, but I do know that it has sparked a tremendous outpouring of support for animal rights. Perhaps the ends don't justify the means...But as far as I can tell, "ends justifying the means" is what animal rights activists are all about.

raven89md said...

Although i do agree that this is outrageous and i would personally punch this artist in the face, I think it is ironic in general how people get so worked up over animal rights, and they forget that there are still people suffering in Africa from worst things. There was a survey that found that most americans would choose to feed their pets(letting them starve/fend for themselves), rather than feeding a starving person in Africa, if they had the chance. Ask yourselves, where do your priorities lie?

fadedinebriated said...

i'm not disagreeing with this act just because i think it's inhumane & sickening. i would appreciate some feedback from " the artist " to see just how he justifies this as a form of art.

I originally shared your shock and disgust at this exhibition of cruelty, but I have to ask you readers to look past it and really find the underlying questions. Not ones solely created by this event, but also by the hubbub around this event.

I encourage you to not just be infuriated by the mistreatment of this dog, but to understand the artists perspective. The fact that the artist finds this acceptable, the fact that the dog died within a day, the fact that he could hire children to do his dirty work, they all point to an even bigger issue.

Look at the states of his country, and similar if not worse countries. Compare the condition of the dog to an orphan street child in the same situation.

It's amazing to see such activism for animal rights, but I encourage you all to focus your energies for justice not toward your housepets, but toward your fellow man.

Thank you.

This "possible urban legend of the dog's death" is UNDETERMINED at this time as of now from Snopes. You can read about it here:
http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/vargas.asp

LOGIC people...logic.
If the dog was chained up without food or water in the condition it was in for several days it would have died long before then. You can only go without water for a very short period of time. That dog was already malnourished and dehydrated by the looks, so it wouldn't have lasted if they hadn't taken exquisite care of it in the exhibit (like supporters of the art have claimed the artist did). Again: supporters of this art have claimed the dog was watered and fed, and unchained for periods of time. Then it was released afterwards.

The artists did this so people would be aware of the problem of underfed, unowned dogs in that country. Not so that people would go all PETA on his ass specifically and sign worthless petitions to stop "animal cruelty" when there (most likely) wasn't any animal cruelty going on. The artists wanted to put a stop to animal cruelty himself...and show people that they should help, not just "observe". He is currently scoffing at the hypocrisy (as am I) of the people who are so "outraged" at this treatment of the dog...but who look past dogs on the streets without a second glance.

I have two little dogs and I treat them as I would my children (better, because I like animals more than kids). So this is not a matter of me 'not caring'. I simply don't think we should all bandwagon on this WHEN YOU DO NOT HAVE THE PROPER INFORMATION.

I couldn't look at the pictures after the first one as it made me cry...I hope this Asshole who thinks he is an artist rots in Hell!!!! He is NOT an artist and is sick in the head...Animals are for us to take care of and the wild ones help us in many ways...we have infringed on them, not them on us...They are a gift from Creator and we can learn much from them...I was taught that we are Animals Keepers...each animal has a gift and lesson that can help us on our path in life...it is in all our stories of animals...Every animal has a Spirit just like us...they live, they breath and hurt...How can anyone hurt them? if someone can hurt an animal, then next they will hurt a human also...Animals have medicine for us...we should treat them well...for when they are gone from this world, so we will be...Life is a circle...With a heavy heart, Melody (Little Wolf)

You just don’t get it do you? This isn’t about the DOG and it never was.

He chose a dog as his subject because he knew the uproar from the nations of the world where dogs are pets would draw attention to this exhibit. This was a clever move on his part, to choose such an emotional driver.

If we make this about the dog and flay the world with our moral outrage, then we don’t have to admit that we have kept walking when a homeless person approached us to ask for loose change, looking past them so we could pretend we just didn’t see them there. Never mind that we’ve ignored countless other unpleasant encounters and it is likely we will continue to do so.

If we make this about the dog, we’re not bastards anymore. We cry out for justice. We care. But we don’t, not really. Not in a way that helps anyone but ourselves. And even then we rationalize. The “Oh, if I had only known you needed help, I would have tossed a dollar or two your way.” helps us to sleep at night.

In reality, this display was about that old cliché, “ignorance is bliss”. If we don’t see the horror, it doesn’t exist, right? If we consign it to the corner of our eye, it won’t have to be in the center of our thoughts.

The artist made his point…we see what we want to see and ignore everything else.

You gotta admit - he had everyone here fooled...

Just because it's on the internet, doesn't make it true. You can't believe everything you read.

Art is made to move people and inspire them to action. His art piece was a complete success by your outrage. He intended for people to get upset, angry and sad. This type of thing happens everyday and no one cares. That is a fact. You all are signing a petition to ban the artist but that doesn't solve the problem you all are now aware of. Signing petitions to ban an artist isn't going to save an animal. Signing a petition isn't going to prevent dogs and people from starving everyday in the future. If you truely support cruelty to animals, then you wouldn't feel like signing a petition to ban an artist was enough. Wake up tomorrow and truely support the digust in your mind and body. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Take action to make sure every dog in his country is feed and watered and taken care of. It's not about the art and the one dog dying in the hands of art. It's about the fact that Humans are able to prevent this in real life and we do NOTHING! That is the disgusting part. You wake up everyday and have breakfast, while people and dogs are dying of starvation. You should look at your life and lack of action in the real world and be disgusted. Until you see what he was really trying to show us, you have overlooked the most important part of what he did.

Paul said...

As disgusting and outrageous as this is, it is art, and it is in no way the place of Americans to suppress it.
Art is supposed to arouse feelings with a message. This has obviously aroused feelings of many people, my self included. It arouses feelings of anger, compassion, and disgust.
This "art" is full of messages. There is a message that the art itself conveys, then there is a message in the reaction to the art.
The chain and the dog are symbolic. The dog is obviously symbolic of a living thing that is starving. Starvation represents a condition that many living things suffer from around the world.
The chain represents a barrier to something better. For the dog this is a barrier that prevents the animal from eating and from escaping its abuse and eventual death. The chain is to the dog, what national borders are for people. Around the world, people are starving and/or being abused in ways that are considered by many, human rights violations. These same countries do not allow their starving abused people to leave the country in pursuit of something better. Even if they could leave, many countries don't allow these same people to enter their country.
There is a message in the response to the art as well. I have mentioned the starvation of humans around the world that goes unnoticed. If there is a petition signing to stop the starvation of a dog, then it means that the life of one dog is more important than the lives of millions of humans around the world. It means that people in the United States are making a move to repress freedom of speech/artistic expression. The United States, in its war against terrorism and military insurgency in Iraq as well as its constitution, touts democracy and the individual rights and freedoms that accompany it.
There is a reason we protect speech and artistic expression. It is because we don't want to suppress messages that warn and uncover human & animal rights violations. This "art" expresses that something should be done to protect human and animal rights around the world. People signing petitions to prevent this expression are defeating their own purpose. If the death of this dog in the name of artistic expression ends up getting people active to fight back against human and animal rights violations, then it will prevent the wrongful death, starvation, and abuse of animals and humans around the world. Therefore, it is a masterpiece, much like Picasso’s “Guernica” which aroused similar outrage, but warned of human rights violations. Let’s protect the right to artistic expression. Don’t suppress the message.
